The Cuckoo

The cuckoo is one of the oldest figures in Ukrainian mythology. She was considered the keykeeper of Vyriy — the otherworldly realm where, besides the souls of the dead, birds also flew for the winter. Because of this, the cuckoo was the first to fly there and the last to return. This duty was so important that she never had time to hatch her own young, leaving her to lay her eggs in the nests of other birds instead.
