Semargl — Guardian God of the Eternal Living Fire and Fertility

SemarglSemargl

Semargl is the Slavic guardian god of the Eternal Living Fire and of fertility during the harvest. He was depicted as a winged wolf or dog. He could protect and punish in equal measure, and was credited with the qualities of a guardian who could warm and heal — or, just as easily, burn everything in his path.

According to one version of Slavic mythology, Semargl lived within the body of every Slav, fighting off their illnesses and inner evil. But if a person grew lazy, drank excessively, neglected their health, or fell into moral decline, Semargl would suffer along with them. As a result, both would fall ill and die!
