- Brother and Sister (Bratky)
Brother and Sister, or bratky, is the Ukrainian folk name for the wild pansy, or tricolor violet. It embodies the union of a brother and sister who unknowingly shared the same blood. According to the legend, a brother and sister married without knowing they were of the same blood. Upon discovering the truth, they decided to end their lives rather than continue living in sin. But no matter where they went, nowhere would let them die. The forest refused to take them in, so did the animals, and even the earth would not accept them. And so they transformed into extraordinarily beautiful flowers, their petals colored in three shades — blue, yellow, and white.
