The birth of Bohdan KhmelnytskyIn Subotiv, in the Cherkasy region, people tell a story: an old childless couple once lived alone. One day, they heard a baby crying in their yard. It turned out that an infant had been left on their porch, which was overgrown with hops (khmil). The old couple decided this was a gift from God and took the boy in, naming him Bohdan. And since they had found the child beneath the hops, they also called him Khmil, or Khmelnychenko.
The death of Bohdan KhmelnytskyBohdan grew up brave and wise, became Hetman, and loyal Cossacks called him their father. For this, and for leading the fight to liberate Ukraine, his enemies hated him. After the Hetman's death, the Polish nobility rejoiced and wanted to steal his body, burn it, and scatter the ashes to the wind. But loyal Cossacks learned of the plot and secretly reburied his body, together with countless treasures.
