JupiterJupiter is the supreme god of Roman mythology. He ruled over the sky and thunder, wielded lightning as his weapon, watched over the keeping of oaths, and was also considered the patron of imperial power. He was the Roman counterpart of Zeus, and inherited from him not only many of his functions but nearly all of his myths as well. Jupiter was also considered a god of light, and was called Lucetius — "the one who gives light."

The bird is often shown clutching lightning bolts in its talons, and the two are depicted together on coins and other objects. Jupiter was especially revered by military commanders, who offered him sacrifices, carried laurel wreaths to his temples, and prayed to him for a triumphant victory.
