The Heraion is the great temple of the Greek goddess Hera on the island of Samos, built on the site of an even older temple. Today only ruins remain, which were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.
According to some accounts, the oldest tree in Greece — a sacred chaste tree (vitex) — grew within the Heraion. According to one myth, Hera was born beneath it, and the Argonauts built the temple in her honor, also bringing a wooden statue of her from Argos.
