PegasusPegasus is the mythical winged horse of Greek mythology. He was born from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa, whose head was cut off by Perseus. He is considered a son of Poseidon, who had lain with Medusa before she was transformed into a monster.
The beautiful PegasusBellerophon was given the task of killing the Chimera, and a seer advised him to use Pegasus for it. The hero found the horse by the spring of Pirene and caught him with the help of a golden bridle. According to other versions, Pegasus was given to him by Athena, or by Poseidon. With Pegasus's help, Bellerophon shot the Chimera with his bow and finished it off with a lump of lead thrust into its jaws, which melted from the monster's fiery breath. After many victories, the hero decided to fly up to Olympus. But Zeus sent a gadfly that stung Pegasus, and the horse threw Bellerophon down to earth. Pegasus remained on Olympus to serve Zeus, carrying his thunderbolts.
