Charon ferried the souls of the dead across the river Styx. In payment, he took coins, which were placed on the eyes or under the tongue of the deceased during the funeral rite. In addition, the dead were also given a honey cake to hold, meant as an offering for another creature of the underworld — Cerberus.
The largest of the five moons of the dwarf planet Pluto was named Charon in his honor.
