Ushabti are figurines from Ancient Egypt that were placed in the grave alongside the deceased. They were inscribed with spells listing the labor tasks the deceased would be called upon to perform in the fields of the afterlife — sowing, harvesting, clearing canals, and carrying sand. It was believed that when the gods summoned the dead to such work, the ushabti would answer in their place and perform the labor for them. They were made from a variety of materials: wood, stone, terracotta, and faience.
