Clurichaun

The Clurichaun is a creature from Irish mythology who lives in the cellar and watches over the stores of beer or wine. He appears as a small old man with a red beard, dressed in red. He belongs to the class of solitary fairies, which is why he favors the color red rather than green. Unlike leprechauns, the clurichaun only appears at night.

He is fond of a drink of wine or beer, especially if the house's owner is himself no stranger to drink. He sometimes frightens off servants who try to steal from the wine cellar. But he usually leads a quiet, hidden life. In some cases, if the clurichaun overindulges, he may grow loud and rowdy — dancing, singing, shouting with joy, and riding around on sheep or dogs. If the owner of the house decides to get rid of the clurichaun by moving to another home, the creature may climb into a wine barrel and follow him there.

Since the clurichaun is considered a subtype of leprechaun, he is fond not only of drink but of treasure as well. He collects gold and valuables and hides them away, using magical abilities and cunning to protect his stash from anyone who tries to find it. But if one manages to befriend a clurichaun and catch him by the beard, he will reveal where his treasure is hidden. Even then, one must stay alert, since a clurichaun might slip in a fake treasure or talk his way into a bargain that he'll break the moment he can slip away.
