AmphitriteAmphitrite is the sea goddess of Greek mythology, daughter of the god Nereus and Doris, and wife of Poseidon. She is depicted riding a chariot made of shells, drawn by dolphins or seahorses.
One day, Amphitrite was dancing with her sisters on the shore of the island of Naxos. Poseidon saw her and fell in love, but the maiden decided to refuse his advances and sought help from the Titan Atlas, who hid her in one of the underwater caves. To find Amphitrite, Poseidon sent a dolphin. The dolphin not only found her, but also persuaded her to return of her own free will. Riding on the dolphin's back, the goddess sailed to Poseidon and became his wife. The god rewarded the dolphin by placing its constellation among the stars. The wedding ceremony became the grandest celebration ever held in the ocean.
