Sobek

Sobek is the Egyptian god of water and rivers, who ruled over the flooding of the Nile. He was depicted as a man with the head of a crocodile, or simply as a crocodile. His wife was the goddess Sobeket.

Sobek was worshipped mainly in regions along the Nile and near lakes, where crocodiles were common. Temples dedicated to him kept sacred crocodile pools, and the animals living there were cared for, adorned with jewelry, and fed by priests. Upon death, these crocodiles were mummified and buried with full honors, much like the pharaohs themselves. Archaeologists have discovered a necropolis containing the mummified remains of more than two thousand crocodiles, testifying to just how deeply the cult of Sobek was rooted in Egyptian life.
